Centers of Excellence: A Vision for New Zealand Flight Training
By Jen Liddle, CEO, Aeroplanned

A vision for flight training built on collaboration.
We have big ideas at Aeroplanned, and we believe excellent planning can be the silver bullet to many of the industry's challenges.
That's why it was such a privilege to speak in the flight training stream at the recent NZ Aviation Industry Association conference. We shared a vision of how New Zealand could revolutionize flight training by planning and collaborating differently — creating centers of excellence for different phases of training. Imagine sunny bases dedicated to visual training, advanced airports focused on instrument training, and students moving seamlessly through an ecosystem designed around their success: a streamlined, resilient pipeline with consistent standards and on-time delivery.
The exciting part is that we could make this vision tangible using Aeroplanned. The software works on two levels — it's a dreamer's tool, showing what could be achieved over time, but it's also the tactical blueprint for how to get there. With visibility of student progress, resources, and bottlenecks, collaborative approaches can be modeled and the advantages of scale clearly shown.
Here's the challenge. Whether a school runs just one 12-month course for 14 students, or twelve of those courses in a year, the number of multi-engine instructors required is the same. Running at that larger scale would make multi-engine resourcing highly efficient — but the single-engine demand would be impossible for most NZ schools. So schools end up forced into trade-offs: smaller groups with poor utilization, or fewer groups that create peaks and troughs. Either way, covering all phases alone is inefficient and unsustainable.
By working together and specializing in phases, schools can share capacity, improve utilization, build resilience, and give students a stronger learning experience.
Big ideas, yes — but achievable ones, with the right planning.
With thanks to Jeremy Ford for the opportunity.
